The best time to visit Tanzania for safari is June to October during the dry season. This is when you see the Great Migration river crossings in Northern Serengeti, big herds in Ngorongoro Crater, and animals gather around water holes.

The second best time is January to February for Serengeti calving season - 8,000 wildebeest babies born per day and lots of predators.

1. JUNE TO OCTOBER - DRY SEASON - PEAK - BEST OVERALL

This is the best time for first time visitors. No rain, easy to spot animals, Great Migration in Northern Serengeti (Mara River crossings July-September). Ngorongoro Crater is at its best. Tarangire has huge elephant herds (3,000 elephants around river). All parks accessible. Book 8-12 months ahead.

Cost: Highest - lodges charge peak rates. $350-$550 per person per day.

Best For: Great Migration river crossings, photography, first time safari, honeymoon.

2. JANUARY TO FEBRUARY - CALVING SEASON - BEST FOR PREDATORS

Southern Serengeti (Ndutu area). 500,000 wildebeest calve - 8,000 births per day in 3 weeks. Lions, cheetahs, hyenas everywhere hunting. Best time for predator action photography. Warm, short grass, great visibility. Less dusty than June-Oct.

Cost: High but slightly less than June-Oct. $350-$500 per day.

Best For: Predator kills, baby animals, photographers, fewer tourists than peak.

3. MARCH TO MAY - LONG RAINS - LOW SEASON - BUDGET

Heaviest rain late March to mid-May. Some lodges close in Serengeti. But parks are green, beautiful, almost no tourists. You get private safari for cheap. Best time for birding (migratory birds arrive) and photography (dramatic skies, green landscape). Black cotton soil gets muddy - need 4x4.

Cost: Lowest $250-$350 per day - save 30%. We offer free airport transfers in this season.

Best For: Budget safari, bird watching, private safari, honeymooners who hate crowds.

4. NOVEMBER TO DECEMBER - SHORT RAINS - SHOULDER SEASON

Afternoon short showers (1-2 hours), but morning sunny. Migration moves back to Southern Serengeti. Good for Zanzibar beach + safari combo. Less crowded than peak. Green scenery returns.

Cost: Mid range $300-$400 per day.

Best For: Zanzibar combo, budget with good wildlife, avoid high season prices.

WORST TIME TO VISIT TANZANIA?

Late March to mid-May is worst for roads - black cotton soil gets muddy in Serengeti and Ngorongoro. But if you are on budget and want private parks with no other jeeps, this is actually your best value month.
